America’s Best Mission-Driven Black-Owned Specialty Coffee Roasters

The Black Lives Matter Movement has unmasked all the symptoms of Racism, exploitation, marginalization, cultural dominance, and violence that are deeply rooted and perpetrated on Black Communities across the states caused by the imbalance of Economic Inequality amongst Blacks and Whites. Much has changed since then. But, unfortunately, the systemic and structural effects of Racism are still very obviously present today.

Racism, exploitation, marginalization, cultural dominance, and violence are deeply embedded n Black Communities across the states caused by the imbalance of Economic Inequality amongst Blacks and Whites.

What is being done at the Federal level? Racial Equity executive orders by the current administration for racial equity have been signed. The H.R.40 bill sponsored by Rep. Jackson Lee to endorse a commission to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans is under review. Though steps in the right direction, Black businesses remain in dire straits, with nearly 50% of them having closed doors for good due to the current Pandemic fueling the economic Inequality amongst Blacks and White families in the U.S. Today, the median wealth for white families is about 12 times that for Black families averaging around $140,000, and one in four black households have zero or negative net worth compared to less than one in ten white families without wealth. Even more concerning is that by 2053, the median wealth for Black families is projected to fall to zero.

What can we do as a community? Restitution proposals have been enacted to heal the wounds inflicted on Black Americans by the legacies of slavery and Jim Crowism. But this will be a tough sell to the American audience considering that only 29% of Americans say the government should pay cash reparations, according to the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.

A laser focus on building more Black-Owned businesses and entrepreneurs has proven to have been a longtime wealth builder in our society. By supporting more Black-owned businesses, Black Americans can create more opportunities for meaningful savings, property ownership, credit building, and generational wealth.

Black-Owned businesses and entrepreneurs has proven to have been a longtime wealth builder in our society. By supporting more Black-owned businesses, Black Americans can create more opportunities for meaningful savings, property ownership, credit building, and generational wealth.

When you support Black-owned businesses, you get products that are valuable for the unique character they bring. Plus, you avoid spending money at other companies that may not celebrate Black culture.

In the United States alone, hundreds of millions of people drink coffee regularly to start their day, a midday boost to get them through the remaining hours of their day, or even as a comfort drink.

With “32 percent of African Americans in the United States drinking gourmet coffee beverages during the past day,” why not create businesses that revolve around this popular commodity?

Whether it be gourmet or non-gourmet, traditional coffee is the most popular option among Americans for their past-day consumption.

Coffee is a multibillion-dollar industry projected to grow annually despite the current Pandemic generating millions of millions of jobs in the U.S. The largest market segment triggering this growth is gourmet coffee roasting, NoirePack Inc’s primary niche.

There are thousands of coffee roasters in the U.S. Sadly; Black coffee roasters only represent a small margin of this highly coveted and competitive coffee market; however, several Black-Owned coffee roasters and brands are that are working to shift the discourse surrounding this popular beverage.

Each of NoirePack’ Black-Owned roasters is unique with a story worth sharing, and we are here to evangelize their stories.

In this spirit, here are NoirePack’s six mission-driven Artisan Black-Owned coffee partners:

CAMPFIRE COFFEE CO.

NoirePack's Campfire Coffee Co.

America's only open flame "Campfire style" coffee roaster, honoring the age-old tradition of roasting over a wood flame.

America's only open flame "Campfire style" coffee roaster, honoring the age-old tradition of roasting over a wood flame. Black, Veteran, and Woman-Owned, Campfire Coffee.

They roast fair trade coffee over a campfire with Pacific Northwest native woods. Yes, you heard that right! The way people did it for hundreds, maybe thousands of years before industrial roasters became a thing. This lost fire roasting art is challenging to get down, but the taste is so worth it. Just imagine a cozy coffee roast, sitting around the fire pit, sharing laughs and memories. That's Campfire Coffee.

They enjoy camping and being with people they love. Their idea of a good time is being outside around a fire kickin' back great food, great drinks with an even greater company. They are passionate about working with community organizations to get more families into nature. Campfire Coffee Co. believes coffee is an excellent tool to push this forward.

They don't claim to be coffee experts. They are not coffee snobs. They appreciate a good roast, they love a single rich origin and a fun blend, but if cream and sugar is how you roll, it's how they roll. They respect the nuances of coffee but even more, they respect that everyone has their thing.

They are advocates for quality coffee, coffee culture, and life motivation. Sailor's Brew Coffee was founded and operated by true coffee lovers, who simply love coffee and enjoy life. They keep things as simple as the calmest sea.

From the South, we embark on a journey to the West coast. We sail to Pasadena, Califia, or Kalifia- the island of California, the land that Black women once ruled. Some call it a myth, but then again, any history tainted with a slight stain of "Black" will always be considered a myth unless it pertains to slavery, then that is Black history.  Nevertheless, Califia is based on the "story" written by sixteenth-century poet Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo, "Las Sergas de Esplandián "or The Adventures of Esplandián written in 1510, a few years preceding the fall of the Moros (Negros or Moors) in 1492.   The Moors enjoyed a good tenure reign of 800 years in Iberia (Portugal/Spain) until they were defeated and surrendered to the "Christian" armies of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in La Reconquista or “Reconquest."

Sailor's Brew Coffee is located in Pasadena, Califia.  An artisan, authentic coffee brand where motivation meets coffee. Sailor's Brew Coffee does not mask the true essence of their coffees and added flavors.  They are advocates for quality coffee, coffee culture, and life motivation. Sailor's Brew Coffee was founded and operated by true coffee lovers, who simply love coffee and enjoy life. They keep things as simple as the calmest sea.

Aside from being coffee lovers, they are lovers of life. Finding motivation and inspiration is key to navigating the seas of life. It is through their motivational coffee culture that they hope to empower every member of the Sailor's Brew Coffee Crew. So whether you're freshly new to the SBC Crew, or you've been sailing with them for a while, they welcome you. Brew strong, sip slow, and get on your voyage! And as always...

BOON BOONA COFFEE

Boon Boona has formed long-lasting, sustainable relationships with coffee producers, exporters, and importers in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, and many more African nations, focusing on supporting woman-owned growers. This means that they cannot only source some of the best coffee from Africa but are also able to share a larger share of our profits directly with the growers while helping develop the African coffee industry.Learn More about Boon Boona Coffee

Jimmy Hendrix, Quincy Jones, Sir Mix -A- Lot and Bill Russell, if these names don't ring a bell, you live under a rock.

These famous Black Seattleites made history in music and sports; nevertheless, Seattle is America's coffee capital. Coffee is the sun that energizes this overcast city.  Even though Starbucks holds the reigns of the coffee scene in Seattle, many local roasters and independent cafes are making a name for themselves as some of the best coffee roasters in the U.S., and Boon Boona Coffe is no exception. "Boon" and "Boona," both meaning "coffee" in different East African languages. And at Boon Boona, they are committed to sharing the unique coffee and coffee traditions of this region — and to supporting coffee growers and our local community in the process.

Growing up in Seattle, Boon Boona founder, and CEO Efrem Fesaha was familiar with the experience of large coffee chains. Coming from an Eritrean family, he also grew up with the traditional coffee ceremony performed by Eritreans and Ethiopians, which is how many people from this region prepare their daily coffee cup.

In 2011, Efrem traveled to Asmara, Eritrea, and fell in love with the local coffee culture. The café experience there was unlike anything he'd seen back in Seattle: The cafes were filled with the scent of freshly roasted coffee and provided a welcoming community environment at the same time.

Returning home with newfound joy and excitement, Efrem set out to put his mark on the coffee industry. After banks rejected his initial business plan to open an East African coffee shop, Efrem didn't give up. Instead, he pivoted to sourcing quality green coffee from Ethiopia for East African communities in the U.S.

Soon his family and friends discovered that they could purchase quality green coffee from him. And since drinking coffee in East African culture is something you often do with others rather than by yourself, word spread fast, and before long, his coffee was being distributed in stores across the West Coast.

By 2016, following the requests of American friends who prefer roasted coffee, Efrem began experimenting with his own roasting techniques. This, too, took off, and he partnered with Seattle's Anchorhead Coffee Roasters to have his coffee roasted. Two years later, the Boon Boona Roastery and Café was born.

Today, Boon Boona has formed long-lasting, sustainable relationships with coffee producers, exporters, and importers in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, and many more African nations, focusing on supporting woman-owned growers. This means that they cannot only source some of the best coffee from Africa but are also able to share a larger share of our profits directly with the growers while helping develop the African coffee industry.
